How to supply your artwork correctly

Even if you are an expert at graphic design or you have designed for print before, all printers work differently and knowing how to supply files correctly to their requirments can save you time and avoid delays and extra costs.

At printing.com we always do our best to help you get the best results with your print but it is important to know that there are differences between what you see on screen and the resulting print. Often we can fix a lot of problems with supplied files but it might result in additional costs and result in the design looking different to what you supplied.

Some of the most common mistakes we see with supplied artwork are,

Wrong Colour mode

When you design, the first thing you choose is the colour mode. For example our presses are set up to handle files in eurocoated and uncoated. If you design in the wrong colour mode you run the risk of it being converted on the press and bringing unexpected results.

Incorrect Resolution

Some programs such as word, powerpoint and publisher default to low resolution images in order to reduce the file size in your document. We would always recommend using desktop publishing tool like Adobe inDesign for your layout in combination with Adobe Photoshop to set up the resolution. The ideal resolution for ourselves should be 350dpi at the size the image will be.

Supplying File Without Bleed

Some printers require different settings such as crop marks extra size. But for us you just need to supply the file with usually 1.5mm on each side. However its always best to ask the printer before you design it as it can depend on what product you are ordering.

Wrong Size

It can be frustrating when you create your artwork and it looks fine on your computer but its set up in the wrong dimensions. Check out our website for dimensions of our products or ask us for a template.
